FREEDOM PROGRAM

The Freedom Program delivers vital life-changing equipment and services for mobility, independence, and social inclusion for children.

At Variety – the Children’s Charity of the Desert, we understand that every family is different. And we are here to help. This program has provided over 90 adaptive bicycles, specialized strollers, wheelchairs, and other mobility aids to children with special needs

45 passenger vans, called Sunshine Coaches, have been provided to our community partners at Angel View, Boys and Girls Clubs, Family YMCA of the Desert, Camp of Champions, Childhood Cancer Foundation, and more, to transport an estimated 4,000 children annually to after school programs, medical appointments, and treatments.

In partnership with Coachella Valley School Districts, over 8,000 bicycles and helmets have been distributed honoring the academic success and good citizenship of underprivileged students.

Our friendly staff and volunteers are glad to speak with any family in need and determine assistance which may be available.

Please contact us with any questions about support your child needs. We are here to help! Email us or call 760-773-9800.

EZEKIEL c.

5 years ago:

“Ezekiel will be 3 years old in July. We received a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome and it was confirmed a few days after birth. He was born with low muscle tone, hypotonia and failed his hearing first 3 tests. He started therapy twice a week and worked really hard to meet his milestones. He currently has met most of his milestones. We use play to practice his interventions. He is funny, curious, charismatic, loveable, he loves to dance, give high fives and kisses. This bike will help with his self-confidence and independence. He mimics his sister Esmeralda and wants to do the things she does. This will bike will allow Ezekiel to continue to work on strengthening his coordination and muscle strength. Ezekiel has an infectious smile and I can’t wait to see him ride his bike. Thank you.”

Today:

“Ezekiel will be 8 years old soon. He has a lot of energy, loves to swim, play baseball and go bowling. He also enjoys riding his adaptive bike. His bike allows him to participate with his sister and cousins. When the weather is great, he loves rides and all the attention he gets. He has a diagnosis of Trisomy 21 and hypotonia. He is super fast on his bike! Keep your eye open, you might see him riding around the Coachella Valley. ”
